Safety in Excavations (Operatives)

Duration and Venue

This is a one-day course aimed at Operatives who excavate on site or in the public highway.

Content

The course covers Hazard identification and understanding Method Statements through to temporary or permanent backfill of the excavation. The course includes group exercises, presentations and practical exercises on site. An end of course multi-choice question paper is set to determine learning outcomes. The modules include: HSE Guidance documents and their interpretation, Risk assessments and method statements, Correct use of a CAT & Genny, Potential contaminated land and understanding soil analysis, Methods of trench support available, The role of the Auditor or Inspector, Understanding plans and schematic drawings.

Assessment and Certification

Specific assessments can be designed in agreement with client’s requirements but, in general the course material is evaluated by means of ongoing assessments, observation of the practical elements and an end of course multi-choice assessment paper.
